Bepanthen Antispetic Cream can be found at most chemists in the baby section — as it was originally designed to treat nappy rash!

Tattoos are generally healed after 2 weeks. With bold tattoos, or tattoos with areas of solid black or colour the healing time may be longer, up to 4 weeks.

First of all you’ll need some Bepanthen and a pump bottle of antibacterial soap.
Do not use bar soap, as it is a breeding ground for bacteria. Pump bottles are best as they keep their contents clean as you use them.

Roughly 2 hours after getting your new tattoo you can remove the dressing. Thoroughly wash your hands with antibacterial soap and remove the dressing.
Only ever handle your new tattoo with freshly cleaned hands.

Jump in the shower or hand wash your tattoo with your antibacterial soap. Do not have a bath.
After showering let your tattoo air dry. Do not use a towel, as it may not be entirely clean.
Apply Bepanthen once the tattoo has dried. Use thin layers to ensure your tattoo can breathe as it heals.

For the first 4 days wash your tattoo and apply Bepanthen afterwards at least twice a day. Continue to apply Bepanthen as needed (each time the tattoo dries out) for the remainder of the healing period.

When sleeping, make sure your sheets have been freshly washed. With bold tattoos, or tattoos with areas of solid black or colour you may experience some ink oozing out of the body and weeping overnight. This is normal and may occur for the first two nights.
Ink will stain light sheets. If this is a concern, wrap the tattoo overnight in cling wrap. In the morning, clean the tattoo as mentioned above and apply Bepanthen after.

If your tattoo has significant areas of solid black or colour then you will experience more oozing and it’s even more important to keep the tattoo as clean as possible during healing, as these tattoos are more susceptible to infection.
If this is the case, wrap the tattoo overnight, for the first 2 nights at a minimum. The first week is the most important to keep the tattoo clean.

If you are ever in an environment where you can’t keep the tattoo clean, (for example; you work in a workshop with dust and debris in the air) then cover the tattoo, either with clean clothing, or wrap the tattoo with cling film. Wash the tattoo with the antibacterial soap and clean hands after removing the cling film.

Your tattoo will begin its peeling stage on day 3 and will become quite itchy around the same time. The body will shed some dead skin, which is flaky in appearance, and usually the colour of the tattoo. This looks strange but is completely normal. Let the skin fall off naturally, do not pick at it, or scratch the tattoo when it becomes itchy. A gentle slap will help the itch without damaging the skin. Picking at the skin can remove ink, leaving the tattoo patchy.

Things to remember

  • Only ever handle the tattoo with clean hands.

  • Don't scratch the tattoo, slap it gently instead.

  • Whatever touches the tattoo needs to be clean (cling film, clothing, sheets).

  • Use thin layers of Bepanthen to ensure your tattoo can breathe.

  • Wash the tattoo at least twice a day for the first 4 days.

Things to avoid

  • Keep your tattoo out of the sun until it’s completely healed. Fresh tattoos are quite susceptible to sunburn.
Once your tattoo is completely healed you can use sunscreen to protect it from the sun and UV damage. This will slow the tattoo from fading.

  • No swimming, baths or spas of any kind while the tattoo is healing. The only time your tattoo should get wet is when you are cleaning it.

  • Keep your tattoo away from pets and their fur.

This looks like a whole lot of information, and might be a lot to digest if it’s your first tattoo. Don’t worry, it’s actually very easy to take care of a new tattoo!

Keep it clean, don’t let it touch anything dirty and keep it moisturized and you’ll be just fine!
